Summary
The Colville School District is thrilled to announce that we are now accepting applications for a dynamic and impactful long-term certificated substitute teacher for a Special Education classroom. This role begins in August 2026 and extends through January 2027.
We are seeking a passionate educator who holds a valid Washington State Teaching Certificate. A Special Education Endorsement is strongly preferred. The successful candidate will be responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating a variety of learning experiences for students in cooperation with other staff members.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Work as a positive and collaborative member of the school staff to foster the primary goals of Fort Colville Elementary School, with a focus on planning, implementing, and evaluating a variety of learning experiences for students at the elementary level.
- Deliver effective instruction and assessment of Elementary Grade Washington State Learning Standards and the District Curriculum goals.
- Make long- and short-range plans for subject areas of instruction.
- Provides for individual differences in the learning needs of students.
- Demonstrates knowledge of subject matter in classroom instruction.
- Provides a classroom climate that is based upon mutual respect, rapport, fairness, and consistency.
- Demonstrates competency in instructional skills.
- Evaluates in terms of planned goals and revises instruction as a result of the evaluation.
- Informs students of their progress in terms of objectives set for the lesson or course of study.
- Interacts positively with students, professional associates, and patrons of the school district.
- Performs job-related, non-teaching duties.
- Directs student teachers, teacher assistants, tutors, and volunteers when such personnel are utilized.
- Handles student discipline and attendance problems.
- Participates in staff development activities.

Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. - Employment is contingent upon clearance by the Washington State Patrol and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
- Must have a valid Washington State teaching certificate, with a Special Education endorsement, and compliance with all applicable Professional Educator Standards Board (PESB) certification and assignment requirements for the position. Multiple endorsements preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to deliver effective instruction and assessment aligned with Common Core State Standards and the district curriculum goals.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective classroom management practices.
- Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively with students, parents, and staff.
- Knowledge of and experience using instructional technology to support curriculum and student learning.
- A favorable report of a state and national fingerprint background check is required.
Salary & Benefits
Long-term substitute employees shall be included in the Colville Education Association (CEA) bargaining unit under the following conditions:
- Twenty Consecutive Days in the Same Assignment Rule:
- Substitute teachers who work in the District for twenty (20) consecutive days in the same assignment during the current school year shall be placed on the salary schedule according to their education and experience.
- It is the responsibility of the substitute teacher to provide all official transcripts, clock hours and experience verifications used for salary placement.
- Extended Assignment Rule:
- An extended assignment is defined as a long-term substitute assignment anticipated to last at least one semester in duration.
- If applicable, extended assignment substitutes may be entitled to professional development opportunities, overload compensation, prep period protection, full benefits, retirement plan participation and/or extracurricular leave provided they meet the extended assignment rule eligibility criteria and the Principal has preapproved.
- Evaluation and Support:
- Long-term substitute employees shall be subject to the same evaluation standards as
regular employees to ensure the maintenance of high educational standards. - The District shall provide appropriate support and resources to long-term substitute
employees to facilitate their success in the classroom, including access to lesson
plans, teaching materials, and mentorship from experienced teachers.
